What is Methane? |

|
|
Methane is a chemical compound and a component of natural gas found easily in the earth’s crust. It has no smell, color or taste. The methane in the atmosphere oxidizes into carbon dioxide and water. It can be used as a fuel and industrial chemical process. It is difficult to transport methane as it is a gas which has normal pressure; it is transported with the help of pipelines and LNG carriers only. Methane is a factor that is causing global warming as it emits radiation causing the greenhouse effect. The greenhouse gases like Methane affect the temperature of earth making it warmer and are 20 times more powerful then other greenhouse gas like carbon dioxide. Methane is also found in the sea beds- namely in the Arctic Ocean and is causing a major concern as it has rapidly increased the temperature and the ice is melting more quickly and many species will become extinct causing more damage to the eco system. If you inhale methane gas you will have a headache and feel dull and will also be short of breath. |
